I am Jo Hayter. I was taught how to journal at a youth camp in my late teens. I subconsciously pigeonholed the technique only to draw upon it years later as I was going through a stressful time without the tools to cope. I purged all my confusion, stress and anxiety onto the page only to have it converted to profound wisdom again and again. Journaling became my inspiration, support and guidance and honestly, I think it has saved my life. Finding a way to express intense emotion privately and safely allowed my body to heal from the repressed stress contributing to health issues.
I love the process and am passionate about inspiring others in journaling. It is free, there are no rules, and it has your back. It is a powerful medium to process trauma, manage stress, work through problems and process anxiety in a safe way. I call journal therapy an oracle of self-understanding. It is a platform to know yourself well, and I mean WELL as in wellness of mind, body and soul. It achieves this by creating a space for self-reflection and exploring and processing thoughts and emotions to gain deeper self-understanding through identifying sabotaging beliefs and behaviours, thus, promoting healing.
The best outcome of journaling is honing intuition. When you understand the language of intuition, and trust and follow these nudges life becomes guided, supported and inspired.
The magic of journaling is that it is about creativity, not just WRITING, it is getting what you feel out of your mind and body and onto the page. It’s a free-flow art form where you can paste, write or draw emotions like big black angry lines or sad or fearful shapes you don't even have to think about, they are illuminated from your inner world. The important thing is to trust yourself and the images and thoughts that come from deep within you, not matter how irrelevant they may seem because they are all signposts to get you to the core of healing in a way that is right and good for you personally.
The aim is to clear your mind so you can connect with what you feel and what you are dealing with and express trapped emotions. Everything that goes down on your paper has something to teach you about yourself, this is where the magic is. Because you intuitively put it on your page, there is meaning that will reveal itself through your process.
